Abstract: | The weights were compared of larvae of Helicoverpa zea, reared for 14 days in the laboratory on 30 soyabean cultivars (5 each from 6 maturity groups). Gnome-85, Essex and Padre were shown to be susceptible and Newton, Walters and Colquitt to be resistant to foliar feeding by the noctuid. In general, larvae grew better on cultivars of northern than on southern maturity groups. Larvae raised on susceptible cultivars had higher lipid contents than those on resistant cultivars. Differences also existed for contents of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. These results indicate that chemical composition of terminals might be involved in soyabean resistance to the noctuid. |
