Abstract: | The presence of cowpea aphid-borne mosaic potyvirus (CAMMV), cowpea mild mottle carlavirus (CPMMV), cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV), southern bean mosaic sobemovirus (SBMV) and cowpea mosaic comovirus (CPMV) in infected leaf material of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) was detected by indirect ELISA applying antisera individually or in a mixture. Similar results were obtained for soybean mosaic potyvirus (SbNV), soybean stunt strain of CMV (SSV) and tobacco ringspot nepovirus (TRSV) in soyabeans (Glycine max). The use of mixed antisera did not, with the ELISA technique applied, affect the sensitivity nor the specificity of detection of the viruses compared with the use of the antisera individually. The 8 viruses used in the study are seedborne (with the possible exception of CPMMV). Potential use of mixed antisera in large-scale testing of the studied viruses is discussed |
