Abstract: | M. roridum was isolated from apparently healthy, surface disinfested, soybean leaf, pod, root, seed and stem tissues, and from sap of stem pieces of field-grown soybean plants over 6 weeks old in Ill. in 1976 and 1977. Its growth on PDA resembles that of Phomopsis sojae, the cause of soybean pod and stem blight. Chlorotic, water-soaked and necrotic lesions developed on nonwounded surface-inoculated leaves, and on wound-inoculated pods and stems. Four or more cortical cell layers beneath stem wound-inoculation points collapsed after 7 days and conidial germ tubes penetrated soybean leaves directly through epidermal cells and at the base of trichomes or through naturally occurring wounds. |
