Abstract: | This previously undescribed disease was characterized by twisting or curling of the leaves, with veinal enations on the under surface. The causal agent was transmitted by Bemisia tabaci in a persistent manner and by grafting but not by aphids, sap inoculation or through seeds. Single whiteflies did not transmit the agent and c. 40 insects were necessary for achieving high transmission rates. Min. acquisition and inoculation access periods were 30-60 min and c. 10-30 min, respectively. Latent period in the vector was 8-10 h and the retention period 9 d. The disease affected 11 plant spp. (Compositae, Leguminosae and Solanaceae) after whitefly transmission. Purified preparations contained a large number of geminate particles and aggregations of viruslike particles were observed in the nuclei of infected cells, suggesting that the causal agent is a member of the geminivirus group |
