Abstract:Uncoupling of nodule organogenesis from endocytosis of Rhizobium may allow the signal transduction pathways that control the expression of host genes for the initiation of nodule primordia to be determined. Nodule organogenesis and events in the genesis of root nodules are examined. The exchange of molecular signals between rhizobia and the host plant was essential to the development of an effective root nodule. Prior to the entry of bacteria into the host, initiation of cell division occurs. Purified nod compounds can initiate cell division. Control of cortical cell division and differentiation of the root nodule are reviewed. The endocytosis of bacteria inside the host cell without provoking host defense reactions is not well understood. Infection by rhizobia triggers proliferation of the membrane system that generated components of the peribacteroid membrane. The targeting of nodulins to the bacteroid compartment and encapsulation of the bacteroid compartment are considered
