Abstract: | The effects of girdling by 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-instar nymphs of Spissistilus festinus on hypocotyls of V1 and V3 growth stages of soyabeans was studied in the laboratory. Injury to V1 stage plants by 4th-instar nymphs (2.8) was greater than that by 3rd-instar nymphs (1.7). Most plants responded to partial or complete girdles by swelling or producing adventitious roots above the girdle. Plant responses by V1 stage plants were greater with 4th-instar nymphs than with 3rd- or 5th-instar nymphs. No significant differences in girdling or plant responses were observed between 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-instar nymphs on V3 stage plants. |
