Abstract: | Three soybean plant introduction (PI) accessions (PI 171451, PI 227687, and PI 229358) were tested against four defoliator insect species (Spodoptera exigua (Hubner), Porthesia taiwana (Shiraki), Anomala cupripes (Bates), and Orgyia sp.) to evaluate their resistance. In a field test, all PI accessions were significantly less damaged by S. exigua than the susceptible control. In a laboratory test, S. exigua laid significantly fewer eggs on PI accessions than on the susceptible control. In a series of foliage feeding tests, PI 227687 showed higher level of antibiosis against S. exigua, PI 171451 against P. taiwana and Orgyia sp., and PI 229358 against A. cupripes. Use of all three accessions to breed a soybean cultivar with multiple insect pest resistance might be necessary. |
