Abstract: | Advanced breeding lines of soyabeans were evaluated for resistance to leaf feeding by the noctuid Helicoverpa zea using 3 screening techniques. The method of testing larval growth on intact leaves was compared with the measurement of larval growth on excised leaves and field evaluation in North Carolina of H. zea damage to small plots. Mean weights of 14-day-old larvae reared on intact leaves of greenhouse-grown plants were positively correlated with the weights of 14-day-old larvae reared on excised leaves taken from the same plants. The mean weights of larvae fed on the intact leaves differentiated resistance better than weights of larvae fed on excised leaves. Mean weights of larvae reared on intact leaves were positively correlated with mean leaf damage to naturally infested plots in field tests. Repeated testing or combined use of both methods is recommended to distinguish highly resistant lines from those with intermediate levels of resistance. |
