Title:A greenhouse method of screening soybeans for resistance to Fusarium wilt.

Abstract:The soyabean lines Late Giant (has shown resistance to F. oxysporum in the field and in preliminary greenhouse tests), F80-6717 (a breeding line with Late Giant in its parentage), Co82-645 (a breeding line with resistance to the nematodes Heterodera glycines, Meloidogyne incognita and M. arenaria), D78-4668 (from which F. oxysporum has been isolated) and Yelredo (very susceptible to F. oxysporum) were evaluated for their reaction to 3 levels of F. oxysporum (13500, 1350 and 675 propagules/g of soil) using a 1-5 scale of increasing susceptiblity. The best separation of mean scores and the largest difference between highest and lowest scores was obtained 21 days after planting in soil containing 1350 propagules/g soil. Late Giant consistently had the lowest scores but D78-4668 was only significantly more susceptible than Late Giant at 21 days after planting and 1350 propagules/g soil. F80-6717 was significantly more susceptible than Late Giant at both 21 and 28 days from planting at 1350 propagules/g soil and only at 21 days after planting could F80-6717 be distinguished from the susceptible Yelredo. Co82-645 was significantly more susceptible than Late Giant in all but one combination and its severe damage occurred irrespective of the presence of nematodes.
