Title:Infection of soybeans with conidia of Cercospora kikuchii.

Abstract:Soybean (Glycine max cv. Bragg) plants at full flower to young pod stage were more susceptible to infection by C. kikuchii than plants at other growth stages. Plants inoculated during this period had smaller seed and a lower yield than the other inoculated and control plants. Seed samples from plants inoculated during full flower had a higher percentage of shrivel than seed samples from the other inoculated plants. Hyphae of C. kikuchii were found on the surface of petals, leaves, pods and seed. Hyphae of C. kikuchii found on the seed coat and in the crevices of the purple-stained seeds grew into the cotyledon through seed coat pores during germination. Hyphae were also observed invading the ovary. The soybean seed coat may play an important role in infection by seed-borne fungi.
