Abstract:The biology of Spissistilus festinus (Say) on soy bean, and three weed species (cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum), prickly sida (Sida spinosa) and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus)) was investigated in greenhouse tests in Arkansas. Adults survived for averages of about 18.7, 26.8, 12.4 and 1.3 days on the four plants, respectively. Reproduction occurred only on soy bean and cocklebur. Nymphal development took 26.8 days on cocklebur and 18.7 on soy bean. Feeding damage was greatest on soy bean, followed by cocklebur and prickly sida. The fourth-instar nymph was the most injurious stage to soy bean, followed by the third- and fifth-instar nymphs and the adult. Nymphs in the first two instars fed by making random punctures and caused no visible damage.
